Atsuta Horaiken Honten (Jinya) – hitsumabushi

An eel house founded in 1873 in Atsuta, near Atsuta Jingū shrine, which holds the trademark on the name "hitsumabushi": eel grilled over binchotan and glazed with a sauce topped up day after day since the Meiji era, served over rice in a large lacquered bowl and eaten three ways (plain, with condiments, then with broth). The 180-seat Jinya head store sits behind a garden path.

The Nagoya-meshi lunch to pair with a visit to Atsuta Jingū. For a group, only kaiseki menus can be booked (by phone, at least three days ahead, in Japanese) and are served in a separate room; à la carte dining is first come, first served and often has a queue. No bookings over New Year, Golden Week, Obon or long weekends. Closed Wednesdays and the 2nd and 4th Thursdays.

Private rooms & private hire

Kaiseki menus are served in private rooms; the restaurant does not publish the number or capacity of its rooms, which must be confirmed at booking. The remaining seats (180 in total) are allocated without reservation.

The menu

Hitsumabushi (regular or "ichihan", one and a half portions), plain-grilled or glazed eel, umaki (eel rolled omelet), grilled eel liver and uzaku. Two kaiseki by reservation: the eel kaiseki (uzaku, liver, sashimi, shirayaki eel, umaki, then hitsumabushi) and the seasonal kaiseki, which also ends with hitsumabushi.
