Kaiseki & ryotei — Kyoto

Hirobun

A restaurant-inn in Kibune, in the valley north of Kyoto, next to the Yui-no-yashiro shrine of Kifune-jinja. From May to late September guests dine on a kawadoko, a tatami platform built over the stream facing a waterfall; from October to April, around the irori hearth. It is also the only house in Kibune serving nagashi-somen.

Corporate use

A summer evening outside the city for a group that has already seen Kyoto: transfer by coach or Eizan train, a cool dinner on the kawadoko, then a walk to the lantern-lit Kifune-jinja. The inn runs shuttles from the city for groups; exact kawadoko capacity to be confirmed, with an indoor fallback in rain.

Private rooms & private hire

A kawadoko over the stream in season (May to late September) and an indoor dining room with irori the rest of the year; exact group capacity is not published and is confirmed on request. Three guest rooms for those who stay overnight.

The menu

In summer, three tiers of kawadoko kaiseki, and hot-pot courses built around a hassun and grilled ayu: wagyu shabu-shabu or sukiyaki, free-range chicken mizutaki or sukiyaki, hamo shabu-shabu and eel hot pot. In winter, irori cooking and wild-boar hot pot. Nagashi-somen is first-come, ticketed, without booking.

Frequently asked questions

When can we dine on the kawadoko?

Roughly from May to late September; it is cancelled in rain (decided at 10:00 that day) or high water, and the meal moves indoors.

How many can the kawadoko take?

The inn does not publish a group capacity; we confirm it case by case and can split a large group across several Kibune restaurants.

How does the group get there?

By private coach (the inn has parking for about fifteen vehicles) or by Eizan train with the inn's shuttle from Kibuneguchi.

What is nearby?

Kifune-jinja (main shrine 4 minutes away, Yui-no-yashiro right next door) and the mountain path to Kurama-dera.
