Street food & yatai — Fukuoka

Nakasu Yatai

The row of street stalls set up every evening along the Naka River on Nakasu island. Fukuoka has more than 100 yatai, which typically open around 6pm and serve ramen, oden, gyoza, yakitori or tempura in a few square meters, with guests sharing the counter with regulars. A defining Fukuoka experience.

Access
Along the west bank of Nakasu on the Naka River; about 10 min on foot from Nakasu-Kawabata or Tenjin stations.

Corporate use

Each stall seats only around ten and local etiquette discourages large groups: we split participants into teams of 6 to 8, reserve across several yatai and host each team. Stalls may close in bad weather, so we always keep a covered alternative ready.

Private rooms & private hire

No rooms: each stall offers around ten seats at the counter or on a few stools under an awning. Bookings and buyouts are only possible case by case with some stalls.

The menu

Depending on the stall: Hakata tonkotsu ramen, oden, gyoza, yakitori, tempura and sometimes French or fusion dishes. Beer, shochu and sake are ordered at the counter; special dietary needs are hard to handle in these tiny kitchens.

Frequently asked questions

How many people per yatai?

Around ten at most; we form teams of 6 to 8 spread across several stalls.

When do the yatai open?

Usually from around 6pm until late; a stall may stay closed in bad weather or if the owner is away.

What if it rains?

We keep a covered option such as Tenjin Norengai, which recreates a lane atmosphere with local dishes.

Are there any rules to follow?

Arrive in small numbers, order as soon as you sit, don't linger when others are waiting and follow each stall's posted rules.
