How to get to Naoshima from Osaka or Okayama
To reach Naoshima, you first travel to Uno Port (Okayama Prefecture) or Takamatsu Port (Kagawa, on Shikoku), then cross by ferry. From Uno the crossing takes 20 minutes; from Takamatsu, 50 to 60 minutes by ferry or about 30 minutes by fast boat. From Osaka, the simplest route is the Shinkansen to Okayama and a local train to Uno.
In practice, from Osaka:
- Shin-Osaka → Okayama on the Sanyo Shinkansen: about 45 minutes on a Nozomi or Mizuho.
- Okayama → Uno: JR Uno Line, about 50 minutes, often with a change at Chayamachi depending on the departure. The Ryobi bus takes around 45 minutes.
- Uno → Miyanoura (Naoshima): a 3-minute walk from the station to the port, then a 20-minute crossing.
With connections, allow 2.5 to 3 hours between an Osaka station and Miyanoura Port. From Kyoto, add 15 minutes of Shinkansen to Shin-Osaka. From Hiroshima, Okayama is 35–40 minutes away by Shinkansen.
Going via Takamatsu makes sense if you are coming from Shikoku, landing at Takamatsu Airport (about 40 minutes by bus to the station), or combining Naoshima with Teshima and Megijima. Takamatsu Port is a 5-minute walk from the JR station.
One common trap: Naoshima has two ports. Miyanoura, in the west, handles the ferries and most boats; Honmura, in the east, is served only by a few fast boats from Uno and Takamatsu. Check which one your ticket shows and which pier it leaves from: ferries and fast boats use different piers in Uno, Takamatsu and Miyanoura.
Naoshima ferries: timetables, fares and capacity
Services are run by Shikoku Kisen. Adult fares listed for 2026 on the official Benesse Art Site Naoshima website:
- Uno → Miyanoura: about 20 minutes, ¥370 by ferry or fast boat; around fifteen departures a day, from about 6:10am to a night boat after midnight (¥730).
- Uno → Honmura: fast boat, about 20 minutes, ¥370, only five runs a day.
- Takamatsu → Miyanoura: ferry in 50–60 minutes for ¥680, or fast boat in about 30 minutes for ¥1,590, with around eight departures a day.
- Miyanoura → Teshima (Ieura) → Inujima: fast boat, about 30 minutes to Teshima (¥820), then 25 minutes to Inujima; three departures a day, and not every day.
These ferries are not reserved: you buy a ticket at the port office before boarding. For an individual traveller that is no problem. For a group, capacity matters more than the timetable: a ferry carries 450–500 passengers, a fast boat only 65–96, and the Naoshima–Teshima–Inujima shuttle 80. On a spring Saturday or during the Triennale, a group of 30 can watch a full fast boat leave without them. We recommend building the group schedule around the ferries and keeping fast boats as a fallback.
On the island, a municipal bus links Miyanoura, Honmura village and the Benesse House area; it fills up quickly when a ferry arrives. E-bikes, rented near Miyanoura Port, are the most flexible option for 2 to 6 people: the island covers about 8 km², but the roads to the museums climb.

What to see on Naoshima: Chichu, Benesse House and Ando's new museum
Most of what visitors come for belongs to Benesse Art Site Naoshima, a group of museums and artworks developed since the late 1980s on Naoshima, Teshima and Inujima. Adult online prices in 2026 (on-site tickets cost ¥100–300 more):
- Chichu Art Museum: ¥2,500 on weekdays, ¥2,700 at weekends and on holidays. Set into the hillside by Tadao Ando, it shows just three artists: Claude Monet (five Water Lilies paintings lit only by daylight), Walter De Maria and James Turrell. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours.
- Benesse House Museum (with the Valley Gallery): ¥1,300. A museum and a hotel in one, open to the sea.
- Lee Ufan Museum: ¥1,200. Few works, a lot of space; under an hour.
- Naoshima New Museum of Art: ¥1,500. Opened on 31 May 2025 near Honmura, it is Tadao Ando's tenth building on the island; open 10am–4:30pm.
- Art House Project in Honmura: old houses turned into artworks. A ¥1,200 combined ticket covers five houses; Minamidera (Turrell, in an Ando building, ¥600) and Kinza (one person at a time) are booked separately.
- Ando Museum (¥600) in Honmura, and Shinro Ohtake's I♥湯 public bath in Miyanoura (¥660, no booking).
Yayoi Kusama's pumpkins are free to see: the red one at Miyanoura Port, the yellow one at the end of a pier near Benesse House. Expect a queue for the yellow one around midday.
For a first visit, book Chichu for late morning, then Lee Ufan and Benesse House Museum in the afternoon (they are close together), and keep Honmura for the next day, or for late afternoon if you are staying on the island.
Bookings and closing days: mistakes to avoid
Most disappointments on Naoshima come from an unchecked calendar, rarely from the weather.
- Mondays: Chichu, Lee Ufan, the Naoshima New Museum of Art and most Naoshima sites are closed. When Monday is a national holiday, they open and close on Tuesday instead. A day trip from Osaka on a Monday makes little sense.
- Tuesdays: the Teshima Art Museum closes on Tuesdays from March to November; from December to February it closes Tuesday to Thursday. The Naoshima–Teshima–Inujima boat follows these closures and does not run when the museums are shut.
- Timed tickets: Chichu, the Teshima Art Museum, Minamidera, Kinza and the Hiroshi Sugimoto Gallery are booked online for a set date and time slot. When a slot is sold out online, there are no on-site sales. Tickets cannot be changed or refunded, unless the museum closes.
- One-off closures: maintenance days, exhibition changes, events. The official Benesse Art Site opening calendar is the reference; check it when you book and again in the week you travel.
- The last ferry: leaving Naoshima for Uno at 5:35pm or 7:02pm still gets you to an Osaka-bound Shinkansen at Okayama; evening departures to Takamatsu are fewer.
For Chichu, book as soon as your dates are fixed, especially for Saturdays, April–May, October–November and the Triennale. The sunset programme around Turrell's *Open Sky* (¥3,700 including admission) is booked separately and is not open to groups of more than 9 people.
Naoshima or Teshima? And Inujima
The two islands complement each other more than they compete. Naoshima has the museums, the hotel and Honmura village; it is the one to visit first. Teshima is more rural, with terraced rice fields and one place that justifies the trip on its own: the Teshima Art Museum (architect Ryue Nishizawa, artist Rei Naito), a white, pillar-free concrete shell where water springs from the floor. Admission ¥1,800 online, timed slot required. Add Christian Boltanski's Les Archives du Cœur (¥600) by the beach.
Inujima, smaller still, is visited for its former copper refinery turned museum and the village art houses.
How to split your time:
- 1 day: Naoshima only, built around Chichu and one or two other museums.
- 2 days: Naoshima on day one, Teshima on day two (boats from Miyanoura at around 9:20am or 12:10pm), returning via Uno or Takamatsu.
- 3 days: Naoshima, Teshima, then Inujima or another Triennale island (Shodoshima, Megijima, Ogijima).
On Teshima an e-bike is almost essential: Ieura Port is several kilometres from the museum, with a solid climb.
Naoshima day trip from Osaka, or where to stay
A day trip from Osaka or Kyoto is possible if you leave early. A typical day:
- 7:00am: Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka, arriving in Okayama around 7:45am.
- 8:00–9:10am: train to Uno, 9:22am ferry, arriving at Miyanoura at 9:42am.
- 10:30am: Chichu Art Museum (booked slot), then lunch at the museum café or near Benesse House.
- 1:30–3:30pm: Lee Ufan, Benesse House Museum, the yellow pumpkin.
- 4:00pm: bus to Miyanoura, the I♥湯 bath if you still have energy.
- 5:35pm: ferry to Uno, back in Osaka around 8pm.
It is a full day: you skip Honmura, and a missed connection costs an hour. That is why we recommend at least one night.
Where to stay:
- Benesse House, on the island: four buildings (Museum, Oval, Park, Beach), with free admission to the Benesse House Museum for guests. The booking system changed for stays from 1 August 2026; book directly with Benesse.
- Guesthouses and minshuku in Miyanoura and Honmura: small, often just a few rooms, tatami and shared bathrooms.
- Okayama or Takamatsu: standard hotels, an hour away by boat and train. This is the solution for a group that cannot find space on the island.
For a second day, Okayama (Korakuen garden) and Kurashiki pair well with Naoshima; our article on Kurashiki and Kojima denim covers that stop. Shodoshima and its soy sauce breweries are an hour by ferry from Takamatsu.

Setouchi Triennale 2028: dates and tips
The Setouchi Triennale is the contemporary art festival held every three years on the islands of the Seto Inland Sea since 2010. It draws around one million visitors per edition. The next one takes place in 2028, in three sessions, according to the calendar published by the organising committee:
- Spring: Friday 14 April to Sunday 28 May 2028 (45 days).
- Summer: Tuesday 25 July to Sunday 20 August 2028 (27 days), shorter than in previous editions because of the heat.
- Autumn: Friday 29 September to Sunday 12 November 2028 (45 days).
That is 117 days in total. A new rule has been announced: each venue will close one day a week during each session, so closing days must be checked island by island before building a programme.
What to know in advance:
- Ferries and fast boats are much busier, with extra sailings on some days.
- A Triennale Passport covers most artworks and some Benesse Art Site museums (Benesse publishes the list); timed-entry museums still need to be checked and booked.
- Accommodation on Naoshima and in Okayama and Takamatsu fills months ahead, especially on spring and autumn weekends.
Outside the Triennale, most permanent museums are open all year: visiting Naoshima in 2026 or 2027 is often the calmer choice.

Naoshima for groups and incentive trips: what changes
Naoshima works very well for an executive group or a culture- and design-led incentive, provided you accept its rules. They are strict and not negotiable.
- 8 people per slot: at timed-entry museums, no more than eight tickets can be bought for the same slot. A group of 24 becomes three sub-groups of 8, staggered in time. Allow a whole morning to get 30 people through Chichu.
- Private coach: a chartered coach that needs to pass through the Benesse House area requires a dedicated request form submitted at least three days before arrival. Otherwise, plan on the municipal bus or shuttles.
- No group visits at the I♥湯 bath or Miyanoura Gallery 6: guests enter in small groups.
- Crossings: put a group of 40 on a ferry rather than a fast boat, or charter a private boat from Uno or Takamatsu, which also links Teshima without relying on three departures a day.
- Meetings: Benesse House has two rooms, the Lecture Room (125 m², in the Museum building) and Park Hall (153 m², in the basement of the Park building), suitable for a working session, a workshop or a reception.
In practice, plan one guide per 8 to 15 people (museums ask for silence, so explanations happen before going in), water and hats in summer, and a plan B for strong winds, which can cancel fast boats. A good programme alternates a day of art on Naoshima, half a day on Teshima and an evening in Okayama or Takamatsu.
SHINOGI DMC can build this kind of programme in Kansai and the Inland Sea, coordinating timed bookings, crossings and transfers from Osaka or Kyoto.
