Samurai experience

An introduction to Japanese sword arts in a dojo, led by an experienced practitioner: etiquette, handling a training sword, kata and a reflection on bushido.

Duration
90 minutes to 2 hours
Group size
6–80 pax
Cities
Tokyo · Kyoto

Participants put on training wear (or a hakama, depending on the format), then learn the bow, posture and how to carry the sword. The master then introduces a few fundamental movements, practiced with wooden swords (bokken) or blunt training swords. Depending on the format, the session ends with a group kata or a cutting demonstration by the master alone.

For a corporate group, the value goes beyond the spectacle. The dojo requires discipline, respect for hierarchy and complete focus; every movement is repeated until it is right. The master often links these principles to leadership: self-control, decisiveness and responsibility to the group.

Bushido, the moral code associated with the samurai, has left a lasting mark on Japanese culture. The session makes it possible to discuss it without cliché, with a practitioner who passes on a living discipline. It takes place in a dojo in Tokyo or Kyoto, or in a hotel function room for larger groups.

Objectives

  • Build focus and self-control
  • Connect martial discipline with leadership
  • Understand Japanese etiquette and hierarchy
  • Live a strong, authentic cultural experience

How it works

  1. 1Welcome at the dojo, shoes off and changing.
  2. 2Bow, posture and safety rules, with interpretation.
  3. 3Learning basic movements with a bokken or training sword.
  4. 4Group kata or paired exercises.
  5. 5Demonstration by the master and discussion on bushido and leadership.

Good to know

  • Participants never handle live blades; any cutting is done by the master alone.
  • Barefoot on tatami: wear clothing that is easy to change out of.
  • Dojos usually host 10 to 30 people; larger groups use a hotel room or rotations.
  • Indoor activity, not weather-dependent.
  • Not recommended for recent back or shoulder injuries; please let us know.

Indicative budget

Indicative: from ~€130 per person for groups (dojo, master, training wear, interpreter), more for a private session with hakama and cutting demonstration. Transfers extra.

Frequently asked questions

Is the activity dangerous?

No. Participants use wooden or blunt swords under the master's constant supervision, with distance and safety rules explained at the start.

Can the samurai experience be combined with another activity?

Yes. In Kyoto it pairs well with a tea ceremony or a Zen session; in Tokyo, with a calligraphy workshop. We manage the logistics between venues.

Can participants keep the outfit?

The outfit is on loan. A keepsake (tenugui cloth, calligraphed certificate or framed photo) can be arranged for each participant on request.
