Lake Ashi cruise and Owakudani ropeway

Hakone's great classic, arranged for a group: crossing Lake Ashi aboard one of Hakone's three "pirate ships", in the special-class cabin or on a private charter, then a ropeway ride above the steam vents of Owakudani, with Mount Fuji as a backdrop on a clear day.

Duration
2.5 to 3.5 hours (cruise, ropeway and stop at Owakudani)
Group size
10–300 pax
Cities
Tokyo
Indicative budget
From ¥15,000 per person

Lake Ashi, formed in an ancient caldera, links the ports of Togendai in the north with Hakone-machi and Moto-Hakone in the south. Three galleon-inspired cruise ships, Queen Ashinoko, Royal II and Victory, sail it all year; each carries more than 500 passengers and has over 270 seats, with a quieter special-class cabin and outer decks from which you see the Hakone Shrine torii standing at the water's edge and, in good weather, Mount Fuji.

For a group, there are two formats. The simplest is to board a scheduled sailing at a group rate (from 15 people), in the special-class cabin. The most memorable is a private charter of a ship: a free route on the lake, cocktails or dinner on board, speeches on deck, decoration in the company's colors. The operator offers it for incentives and corporate evenings, by day or night, except during operating hours from December 1 to March 19, when the ships are maintained.

At Togendai, the Hakone Ropeway takes the group over the volcanic valley of Owakudani, where steam escapes from the mountain and visitors taste kuro-tamago, eggs blackened in the hot springs. The line continues to Sounzan, from where the cable car and mountain railway descend to Gōra and its ryokans. It all fits easily with an arrival by Romancecar from Shinjuku and a late-afternoon ryokan check-in.

Objectives

  • Discover Hakone's signature landscapes in a smooth half day
  • Create a memorable group moment, up to a fully chartered ship
  • Link Tokyo and the Gōra ryokans without unnecessary transfers

How it works

  1. 1Private coach to Moto-Hakone or Hakone-machi, short walk to the Hakone Shrine torii.
  2. 2Boarding in the special-class cabin on a scheduled sailing, or aboard the ship chartered for the group.
  3. 3Crossing to Togendai (about 40 minutes), group photo on deck facing Mount Fuji on a clear day.
  4. 4Ropeway to Owakudani: steam vents, kuro-tamago, shop and lookout.
  5. 5On by ropeway to Sounzan, then the cable car down to Gōra, or a direct coach to the ryokan.

Good to know

  • Group rates from 15 people on the ships and from 25 people on the ropeway; a ship charter is booked by phone with the operator.
  • No charters during operating hours from December 1 to March 19 (ship maintenance); night charters are possible, with a maximum of 450 passengers.
  • The ropeway and the Owakudani site sometimes close when volcanic gas levels rise: we check on the morning itself.
  • Fog and strong wind can change or suspend the cruise; rain alone does not stop it.
  • Plan B: coach to Gōra by road, and a visit to the Hakone Open-Air Museum or the Pola Museum in place of Owakudani.

Indicative budget

From ¥15,000 per person (cruise in the special-class cabin, ropeway, English- or French-speaking guide and private coach from Hakone-Yumoto, based on 20 people), as an indication. Private ship charter, cocktails or dinner on board on request.

Frequently asked questions

Can we charter a pirate ship for our group?

Yes, the operator charters its ships for incentives and corporate evenings, with a free route on the lake. Requesting a specific ship costs extra, and charters are not possible during operating hours from December 1 to March 19. Weekends and peak periods are often full: book early.

Will we see Mount Fuji?

It is never guaranteed. The best chances are in winter and late autumn, early in the day; summer is often hazy. The program stays worthwhile without Fuji: the lake, the floating torii and the Owakudani valley are enough to make it a highlight.

What happens if Owakudani is closed?

We check the alert level and the ropeway's status on the morning itself. If it is closed, the coach meets the group at Togendai and drives to Gōra by road, with a visit to the Hakone Open-Air Museum or the Pola Museum, without delaying the ryokan check-in.

How much time should we allow from Tokyo?

About 1.5 hours by Romancecar from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto, then 35 to 45 minutes by coach to the lake. Leaving Tokyo late in the morning, the group sails in the early afternoon and reaches Gōra around 5 pm.
