Funasei Yakatabune

An operator of yakatabune, the traditional covered boats where dinner is served on the water, based in Kita-Shinagawa, once the first post town on the Tokaido. Its charter fleet runs from 32 to 120 places, on chairs or sunken-kotatsu seating, all with an observation deck. The roughly 2.5-hour cruise moors off Odaiba, then heads up the Sumida River to around Eitai Bridge, facing the Skytree.

Corporate use

A very Japanese team evening that is easy to organise: one package covers the cruise, dinner and free-flow drinks, and the boat is chosen by headcount (charters from 20 people, with a guaranteed minimum per boat). Some boats have karaoke and bingo on board. The pier is 13 minutes on foot from Shinagawa Station and has no parking, so we arrange a coach drop-off nearby.

Private rooms & private hire

Each boat is chartered as a whole. Atsuhime: 32 places, comfortable up to 24 (chairs). Orihime: 48, recommended up to 35 (sunken kotatsu). Murasaki-shikibu: 60, recommended 45 (sunken kotatsu). Benkei and Shizuka-gozen: 72 each, recommended 50 and 60 (chairs). Ushiwakamaru: 104, recommended 76 (sunken kotatsu). Kaguya-hime: 120, recommended 90 (sunken kotatsu). A shared boat with semi-private areas also takes small parties from 2 guests.

The menu

Japanese food prepared by the house cooks, built around tempura served during the cruise (seven seasonal pieces per person) and wild bluefin sashimi, with starters, rice, noodles and dessert; higher courses add wagyu, spiny lobster or otoro. Free-flow drinks are included. A vegetarian version of the first course is available with advance notice, and there is a menu designed for groups with religious or allergy restrictions.
